POEMS AND POETRY BOOKS-THOUGHTS ACROSS A LIFETIME - AUSTIN EDWARD (FERD) ORCHARD

         Bigot's Banquet
         Austin Edward Orchard

Samples of time,
Moments of far off days,
Recalled from the past
Of youth and being young,
Held in hungry minds
And cherished and wrapped each night
In nostalgia's lies;
And with the passing of the years,
They lie and gather dust,
To be re-opened with the dinner
Instead of the wine,
Tasted with imperfect recall,
Improved with each decant.
See now the guests settled
Whilst the menu is implied,
A choice of how it was
And how it could have been;
Biasly selected,
Their share of the pie.
This banquet of memories
Prepared by the lonely,
Filling the empty crust of their lives,
A regurgitation of banal and half-baked dreams
They associate with living.
And when this feast of self approval
Nears its end,
Bring forth the cake of life,
The one they never had;
Picked at with boorish manner,
Leaving only the crumbs of bigoted taste
Upon the cracked and dirty plates,
Scattered amidst the empty
'Rosé-tinted' glasses.
